A Fascinating Search For The Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I ran across a fun news article about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golowan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornwall&#8217;s mid-summer Golowan Festival<\/a>, which has its strongest representation in Penzance. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(If you want to get a taste of the culture of Cornwall, make sure you watch the video as well.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what was the theme of this year&#8217;s Golowan Festival in Penzance?<\/strong> Well&#8230; it was the Cornish story <strong>where King Arthur protects the coast from Viking raiders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ifCSyDXzAN4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nAnd I laughed when I heard this<\/strong>, because the Vikings didn&#8217;t come until the 700&#8217;s, and King Arthur lived in the 500&#8217;s. How could King Arthur fight the Vikings when they didn&#8217;t overlap?<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Adele\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/originalrobinhood.com\/blog\/skins\/lush\/img\/Adele_2010.jpg?w=100\" alt=\"Adele\"  \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>But then my daughter, Adele, told me a few of her theories.<\/strong> Now, mind you, her theories may sound strange, but she has researched both widely and deeply into the myths of Britain, Ireland, England, and Scotland, and you would be hard-pressed to gainsay her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Her first (less controversial) theory is that there was more than one King Arthur<\/strong> &#8230; first of all an earlier one whose legends became attached to and confused with the later, 6th century one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Her second (more controversial) theory is that this early King Arthur<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fionn_mac_Cumhaill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fionn mac Cumhaill<\/a><\/strong> (Finn McCool), and <strong>Robin Hood <\/strong>were all three contemporaries who fought the same people&#8230; <strong>in pre-Christian Britain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This theory is &#8220;felt&#8221; as much as it is fact-based: She perceives the many threads of similarity at the heart of these legends and has found clues that other people dismiss or skip over.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And so she posited a very interesting idea:<\/strong> Since she has found evidence of both Robin Hood as well as Fionn mac Cumhaill fighting the Lochlainn (Norse, or pre-Vikings), <strong>then surely King Arthur did as well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Book_of_Hergest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Red Book Of Hergest\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/4\/42\/Red.Book.of.Hergest.facsimile.png\/180px-Red.Book.of.Hergest.facsimile.png\" alt=\"The Red Book Of Hergest\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>This was entirely a guess on her part.<\/strong> She challenged me to look at the oldest Welsh text about King Arthur found in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Book_of_Hergest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Book of Hergest<\/a><\/strong> to see who his enemies were.<\/p>\n<p>So I looked, and after much digging, was very surprised to find that <strong>King Arthur did indeed fight the Norse.<\/strong> Here is what <strong>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.answers.com\/topic\/breuddwyd-rhonabwy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Dictionary of Celtic Mythology<\/a>&#8221; by JAMES MacKILLOP<\/strong> says about the Dream Of Rhonabwy (a story in the Red Book Of Hergest):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The different heroes and companions that compose Arthur&#8217;s army are minutely described. Although Arthur is to ride to do battle with his enemies from Llychlyn [Norway] and Denmark, he is more concerned with the chess-like game of gwyddbwyll he is playing with Owain son of Urien.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" title=\"Merlin's Shadow\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.epictales.org\/images\/Robert\/covers\/Merlins_Shadow_200x300.jpg?w=200\" alt=\"Merlin's Shadow\"  \/>There it was.<\/strong> The text even uses the Welsh &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.answers.com\/topic\/llychlyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Llychlyn<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;, which is equivalent to the Irish Gaelic &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Llychlyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lochlainn<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;, the EXACT word my daughter had used before we knew it was in the text.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, maybe that Golowan Festival in Penzance is right after all. Amazing!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not that there&#8217;s any invasion from Norway in the book, but I&#8217;m delving into the fascinating history of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Lot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Lot<\/a><\/strong> and his family background.The other nice thing about this is that I have now learned the ancient name for Norway, which will come in mighty handy for my <strong>Book 2 of the Merlin Spiral: Merlin&#8217;s Shadow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blood-Judgment-Lars-Walker\/dp\/0743471733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"goright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51VVMG5YH7L._SX200_BO1%2C204%2C203%2C200_.jpg?w=1200&#038;ssl=1\"\/><\/a>Also, if you&#8217;re interested in a novel that includes both King Arthur and (proto) Vikings, then look no further than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.larswalker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lars Walker<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blood-Judgment-Lars-Walker\/dp\/0743471733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BLOOD AND JUDGMENT<\/a>! <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the super-fun description of the novel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All Will Sverdup wanted was to play Hamlet in an amateur production.
