{"id":5992,"date":"2010-10-05T20:38:24","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T01:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epictales.org\/treskillard\/2010\/10\/05\/i-m-back-from-the-laity-lodge-writers-retreat\/"},"modified":"2010-10-05T20:38:24","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T01:38:24","slug":"i-m-back-from-the-laity-lodge-writers-retreat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.epictales.org\/treskillard\/2010\/10\/05\/i-m-back-from-the-laity-lodge-writers-retreat\/","title":{"rendered":"The Laity Lodge Writers Retreat: A Travelogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I arrived back form the western foothills of Texas on Sunday night<\/strong>, and thought I&#8217;d write about my experience at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laitylodge.org\/laity-lodge-writers-retreat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laity Lodge Writers Retreat<\/a><\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Laity_Lodge_Fountain.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>The Laity Lodge courtyard and fountain.<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p>(The following notes are as best as I can remember, so if I have forgotten details or gotten the order of events mixed up&#8230; mea culpa!)<\/p>\n<h2>Thursday<\/h2>\n<p><strong>After six hours of travel<\/strong> (four flying and two driving), I arrived at the lodge, making friends with Cameron Lawrence on the way: a poet and soon to be father. Olga drove us&mdash;right through the river in the canyon&mdash;the only way to get to the lodge!<\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Laity_Lodge_RiverDrive.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>The view of the &#8220;road through the river&#8221; out the back of Olga&#8217;s jeep.<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>After settling into my room<\/strong> that I shared with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/DavidSMeacham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Meacham<\/a><\/strong>, I went and explored the Frio River, which had been dammed up to make a kayaking, swimming, and fishing area in front of the lodge.  Amazing!<\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Laity_Lodge.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>The Laity Lodge great hall and dining room across the Frio River in southwest Texas.<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p>While I was waiting for our orientation session to start, I spoke briefly with author <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hero-Graphic-Novel-Stephen-Lawhead\/dp\/1576835006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ross Lawhead<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/StephenRLawhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen R. Lawhead<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s son.  We chatted about his and his father&#8217;s books, and then I went to sit down again. <\/p>\n<p>I was very nervous about approaching his dad, who shortly entered the room. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Well, I had nothing to worry about, because within about five minutes, <em>Stephen Lawhead approached me!<\/em><\/strong>  Ross must have mentioned my name, and Stephen must have recognized it from my writing sample as well as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tegid?v=wall&amp;ref=search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tegid<\/a><\/strong> mentioning my name at the Dallas book signing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Skin-Map-Bright-Empires\/dp\/1595548041\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1286304445&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"goright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51xrxfRvDmL._SX200.jpg?w=1200\" alt=\"The Skin Map by Stephen Lawhead\" title=\"The Skin Map by Stephen Lawhead\" \/><\/a><strong>Anyway, we spoke for awhile, and he was very friendly!<\/strong> Soon the bell tolled for dinner, and I was able to sit across from him and we spoke at length about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebrightempires.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Skin Map<\/a><\/strong> and the direction the series will take. <\/p>\n<p>At the session that night, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=874930079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Purcell<\/a><\/strong> (the director of Laity Lodge) shared <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laitylodge.org\/discover-laity-lodge\/history-and-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the history of Laity Lodge<\/a><\/strong>, as well as the H.E.B. Grocery store chain and the family that founded it. It is truly amazing what God has done!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The worship music<\/strong> was provided by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ashley-Cleveland\/e\/B000APW8K0\/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1286303955&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashley Cleveland and Kenny Greenburg<\/a><\/strong>, and it was heartfelt, fun, and jazzy with a touch of soul.<\/p>\n<p>David and I stayed up late talking about writing, and soon it was&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Friday<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I slept in until breakfast &#8230; and here I must express my thanks to the kitchen staff<\/strong> for graciously providing me with vegetarian alternatives where needed.  While I eat eggs and fish, it was wonderful to have fresh salads, quinoa, squash, mashed potatoes, and an asian cabbage dish as alternatives at the various meals!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/End-Suffering-Finding-Purpose-Pain\/dp\/1557255636\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1286290138&amp;sr=8-3-spell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"goleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/41xkUVQug4L._SX200.jpg?w=1200\" alt=\"The End of Suffering by Scott Cairns\" title=\"The End of Suffering by Scott Cairns\" \/><\/a><strong>Scott Cairns<\/strong>, a poet and professor from Mizzou (the University of Missouri, Columbia) gave the devotional that morning, reading from his book <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/End-Suffering-Finding-Purpose-Pain\/dp\/1557255636\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1286290138&amp;sr=8-3-spell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The End of Suffering<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afterward, we had our first fiction writing workshop with <a href=\"http:\/\/lookingcloser.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Overstreet<\/a><\/strong>. Jeffrey has written the excellent Auralia&#8217;s Colors series, and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment arriving next Spring: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ale-Boys-Feast-Auralia-Thread\/dp\/1400074681\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1286305302&amp;sr=1-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Ale Boy&#8217;s Feast<\/a><\/strong>.  I had Jeffrey sign all my copies of his books, woo-hoo!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Auralias-Colors-Auralia-Thread-1\/dp\/1400072522\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1286305302&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"goright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51II3qX21aL._SX200.jpg?w=1200\" alt=\"Auralia's Colors by Jeffrey Overstreet\" title=\"Auralia's Colors by Jeffrey Overstreet\" \/><\/a>At lunch I sat with Jeffrey and his wife and got to know them a little better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then came free time, and I spent some time kayaking on the Frio river<\/strong> &#8230; absolutely clear and fresh. Amazing! <\/p>\n<p>At the end of my journey, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodwordediting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcus Goodyear<\/a><\/strong> and I had a talk about our books and struggles &#8230; he laying on the floating dock and me sitting on the kayak.   This was fun, because Marcus and I met online a few years ago, and the writers retreat is his brainchild.  <strong><em>Thanks, Marcus!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At dinner I was able to eat with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stephen-R.-Lawhead\/e\/B000AQ4NUC\/ref=sr_tc_img_2_0?qid=1286304445&amp;sr=1-2-ent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Lawhead<\/a> in front of me, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Jeffrey-Overstreet\/209103512318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Overstreet<\/a> next to me, so that was quite amazing.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The general session that night was by Jeffrey Overstreet on how to tell stories.  <em>Excellent, heartfelt, insightful, and touching.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Robert_JeffreyOverstreet.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>Robert with Jeffrey Overstreet.<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Paradise-War-Song-Albion\/dp\/1595548904\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"goleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/61sBcchKbsL._SX140.jpg?w=1200\" alt=\"The Song of Albion by Stephen Lawhead\" title=\"The Song of Albion by Stephen Lawhead\" \/><\/a><strong>Stephen Lawhead also signed my two copies of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebrightempires.com\/hunt\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Skin Map<\/a><\/strong> (one to give away next month as part of the CSFF Blog Tour), and book one from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Paradise-War-Song-Albion\/dp\/1595548904\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Song of Albion: The Paradise War<\/a><\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephen, Ross, and I had a fun time<\/strong> trying to figure out which edition the book was and where it was published&#8230; because I had bought it recently to replace one lent and never seen again.  This copy was slightly smaller than the standard edition, and we finally concluded that it must have been a book club edition.<\/p>\n<p><em>I would have brought all my books for him to sign, but, alas, my suitcase would have exploded!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soon it was&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Saturday<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The morning was a blur, the workshop with Jeffrey excellent, and I soon found myself preparing to meet Stephen Lawhead for my 45 minute writer&#8217;s consultation about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epictales.org\/treskillard\/cat14\/cat24\/\">Merlin&#8217;s Shadow<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beforehand I went to the art center<\/strong> and made a bead necklace for my wife, Robin, from the hundreds of beads they had available.  The art supplies are all free, and I was able to make something special for her.<\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Robert_StephenLawhead.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>Robert with Stephen Lawhead, his son, Ross, and wife, Alice.<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the consultation I received one-on-one help from the master novelist himself.<\/strong>  Stephen has a unique perspective ideally suited to advising me, and he helped me realize:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epictales.org\/treskillard\/cat14\/cat24\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"goright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/epictales.org\/images\/Robert\/Merlins_Shadow.jpg?w=200\" alt=\"Merlin's Shadow by Robert Treskillard\" title=\"Merlin's Shadow by Robert Treskillard\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I need more rigor in my name and place-name choices<\/strong>, creating proper spelling and pronounciation rules. For instance, I need to avoid using <em>both<\/em> &#8220;C&#8221; and &#8220;K&#8221; and pick one or the other (&#8220;C&#8221; being my choice)<\/li>\n<li><strong>I need to limit my one sentence paragraphs<\/strong>, which I seem to litter all over my chapters.  &#8220;If everything is special, then nothing is&#8221; &#8230; and I need to use these at most once a chapter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I need to check all of my dialog<\/strong> to make sure it never sounds like a 20th century American with bad grammar!  Likewise, some of the dialog can be too formal for some characters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>In short, though, I was greatly encouraged, and with these minor changes the speedbumps should be removed for those more familiar with ancient British history.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Then we enjoyed a concert from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Over-the-Rhine\/e\/B000AQ0CWA\/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2?qid=1286311397&amp;sr=8-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Over The Rhine<\/a><\/strong>, who taught the songwriting workshop during the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ah yes, the evening ended with <strong>a rousing ping-pong battle between musician\/comedian Jim Gill<\/strong> and I &#8230; more about him on Sunday!<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/jimgill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jimgill.org\/images\/Jim%20guitar%20shot.JPG?w=250\" alt=\"Jim Gill\" title=\"Jim Gill\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<h2>Sunday<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sunday morning began for me as usual<\/strong> &#8230; up early, tea in hand, sending emails to my family to start their day, and writing a new scene in Merlin&#8217;s Shadow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The final meeting of the retreat was a worship service.<\/strong>  For this they reversed all of the chairs so that we could see God&#8217;s creation in the incredible view of the canyon.  <\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/FrioRiver.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>The beautiful Frio River<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>As part of this, they had a sharing time, and Jim Gill and Jeffrey Overstreet had planned a humorous skit<\/strong> of Jeffrey singing a modified &#8220;Rainbow Connection&#8221; while holding a Kermit-like green sock-puppet playing a Banjolele (a ukulele like banjo). Jim hid behind the piano and played his full size banjo so it would appear that Kermit was doing it.<\/p>\n<p><center><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.EpicTales.org\/images\/Robert\/Laity_Lodge\/Kermit_JeffreyOverstreet.jpg?w=400\" alt=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" title=\"Laity Lodge Writing Retreat\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><em>Jeffrey Overstreet with Kermit The Sock, and Jim Gill hiding behind the piano<\/em><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it was hilarious, and a hard act to follow for the more serious minded.  <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reallivepreacher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gordon Atkinson<\/a><\/strong> gave a strong message pointing to our need for grace, and then we received communion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brunch was spent with Stephen Lawhead and Gordon Atkinson<\/strong>, and then came the time for the long trip home to my wonderful, loving wife and family!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before leaving, I was able to spend time in the airport with fellow church-member, <a href=\"http:\/\/faithfictionfriends.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glynn Young<\/a><\/strong>.  We had seen each other for years at the large church we attend, but had never spoken.
